What is Christian Discipleship?
If you look it up in a dictionary you find that it pertains to "a follower, a pupil of a teacher", and for Christians that teacher is Jesus Christ.
Discipleship comes from the Latin for learner, and it's useful to keep this in mind as it is an ongoing process as our relationship with Jesus Christ develops and deepens.
Discipleship challenges those who have a relationship with Jesus Christ to walk closer to Him, both personally and as part of the church.
Discipleship should demonstrate our commitment to live Christ like lives and challenge and encourage those who don't yet have a relationship with Jesus Christ.
Very often this means live our lives contrary to the ways of the world around us, as we reflect upon and determine to become more Christ like.
As Christians we know that we cannot do this in our own strength, but are enabled by relying on God to change us through the Holy Spirit working in our lives. |
